Fazenda Dutra
Fazenda Dutra

In the lush, mountainous landscape of Matas de Minas, a region known for its small-to-medium farms and rolling terrain, Fazenda Dutra stands as a shining example of what happens when tradition, innovation, and sustainability come together in perfect harmony. Though Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer, and Minas Gerais accounts for more than half of its total output, this family-run estate produces something truly special—coffee that reflects not only the richness of the land, but the values of the people who farm it.

More than 50 years ago, the Dutra family began planting coffee in this region. Today, the estate spans nearly 2,500 acres, encompassing 10 distinct farms and over 3 million coffee trees. Every cherry is hand-harvested—a rarity in Brazil—by over 600 seasonal workers during harvest, allowing for meticulous quality control and full traceability. While the estate may seem large, by Brazilian standards it’s modest in scale, which has enabled the Dutras to focus on producing specialty-grade, direct trade lots with incredible attention to detail.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword here—it’s a deeply rooted philosophy. Fazenda Dutra is 100% solar-powered for its depulping operations, and plans are underway to convert all mechanical dryers to solar as well. The estate maintains over 750 acres of preserved native forest, which protects natural water sources, prevents erosion, and provides biodiversity corridors for wildlife. Beyond these efforts, the Dutra family actively prioritizes organic practices—limiting synthetic inputs, enriching the soil with natural compost, and protecting ecological balance with shade trees and cover crops that improve water retention and nutrient cycling.

Their commitment to sustainability goes hand in hand with their care for people. The Dutras have invested in an on-site school, ensuring access to education for employees' children, and they provide a comprehensive health care program for workers and their families—an uncommon benefit in rural farming communities.

In every sense, Fazenda Dutra is a model of eco-conscious agriculture. From clay-rich volcanic soils and solar-powered equipment to organic farming practices and community well-being, every decision on this farm is made with long-term impact in mind. The result is more than just an exceptional cup of coffee—it's a product of purpose, progress, and genuine care.

Asociación Barillense de Agricultores (ASOBAGRI)

Founded in 1989, ASOBAGRI (Asociación Barillense de Agricultores) is one of Guatemala’s most respected and progressive coffee cooperatives. Based in the remote town of Santa Cruz Barillas in the highlands of Huehuetenango , this cooperative represents over 1,200 smallholder producers , the majority of whom are indigenous Q’anjob’al Maya . These families have been cultivating coffee for generations using traditional and organic methods that are deeply rooted in cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.

ASOBAGRI was established to empower local farmers by providing fair market access, technical support, and community development. It is committed to organic and Fair Trade practices, promoting sustainable farming and improving the livelihood of its members. The coop emphasizes gender equity and supports a special women’s program called Café de Mujeres , which focuses on coffee produced exclusively by women members to enhance economic independence and recognition within the coffee value chain.

ASOBAGRI operates its own wet and dry mills, quality control lab, and export logistics — ensuring full traceability and consistency from farm to final cup. The cooperative also invests in reforestation, clean water initiatives, education, and training to build a better future for its members and the land they care for.

ASOBAGRI’s dedication to quality and sustainability has earned it a reputation for producing some of the finest certified organic coffees from Guatemala — characterized by vibrant acidity, rich body, and notes of chocolate, spice, and citrus.

Association El Bombo (El Bombo Cooperative)
Association El Bombo (El Bombo Cooperative)

ASOBOMBO is a cooperative of smallholder coffee farmers based in southern Huila, Colombia, particularly around Pitalito and neighboring communities . Rather than operating as a single estate, the cooperative brings together family-run farms located throughout Huila’s mountainous coffee-growing landscape. Many producers cultivate coffee on relatively small plots at high elevations, where cool temperatures, abundant rainfall, and mineral-rich volcanic soils create favorable conditions for growing high-quality Arabica coffee.

Coffee farming in this region is closely tied to generations of family agriculture. Producers carefully manage varieties such as Castillo, Caturra, and Colombia , with participating organic farmers following certified organic cultivation practices. The mountainous terrain and fertile soils provide good drainage while supporting healthy coffee development, and the high elevations contribute to slower cherry maturation.

During harvest, ripe coffee cherries are selectively picked by hand and typically processed using the washed method . Cherries are pulped, fermented, washed, and carefully dried before the coffee is prepared for export. Through ASOBOMBO, smallholder farmers gain access to shared resources, certification support, quality programs, and international specialty coffee markets.

The coffee represents the collective work of farming families across southern Huila rather than a single farm. Their combination of high-altitude cultivation, mineral-rich volcanic soils, organic farming practices, careful harvesting, and traditional washed processing reflects the strong coffee-growing heritage of the region.

KSU Buana Mandiri
KSU Buana Mandiri

This coffee is sourced from smallholder farmers organized through KSU Buana Mandiri in the Gayo Highlands of Aceh, Northern Sumatra, Indonesia . The cooperative represents family-owned coffee farms spread throughout the mountainous coffee-growing landscape of Aceh, where generations of farmers cultivate Arabica coffee in a cool, humid highland environment. The region’s combination of high elevation, abundant rainfall, tropical vegetation, and Volcanic-Rich Highland Andosol Soil provides favorable conditions for producing dense, flavorful coffee cherries.

The farmers associated with KSU Buana Mandiri typically work on small family-managed plots, relying on careful hand cultivation and selective harvesting. Coffee production within the cooperative system allows individual producers to participate in shared collection, processing, quality-control, certification, and market-access programs. The cooperative structure is particularly important for smallholders, helping connect their individually produced coffees with international specialty and Fair Trade markets while maintaining greater consistency throughout the supply chain.

Coffee from the Gayo Highlands is predominantly Arabica , with farmers cultivating traditional and locally adapted varieties suited to the region's mountainous environment. Ripe cherries are selectively hand-harvested during the main coffee season before entering the local processing network. Sumatran coffee is widely recognized for its traditional Giling Basah (wet-hulling) process, in which parchment coffee is partially dried before the parchment is removed and the green coffee is dried further. This distinctive processing method contributes to the full body, gentle acidity, earthy character, and deep complexity commonly associated with coffees from the region.

As a Fair Trade and Organic cooperative coffee, this offering reflects more than the production of an individual farm. It represents the collective work of smallholder producers who depend on cooperative organization for processing infrastructure, quality management, certification, and access to international buyers. KSU Buana Mandiri's cooperative model connects these farming communities with broader markets while supporting the traditions and agricultural practices that define coffee cultivation in the Gayo Highlands of Northern Sumatra.
